Andrew M. Holmes

Andrew M. Holmes is a San Francisco-based partner and registered patent attorney at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP, focusing on high-stakes technology-based patent litigation. He was elected partner in 2017. His practice spans a diverse array of technical fields, including data center technology, network and computer security, graphics processing and architecture, semiconductors, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, streaming technologies, digital rights management, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and various consumer electronics.

Mr. Holmes primarily represents operating companies as defendants against patent infringement claims. This is reflected in his tracked appearances, which are all on the defendant side, as well as his extensive representative client list, which includes major technology and healthcare companies such as Fortinet, SK Hynix Inc., Qualcomm, Netflix, Hulu, NVIDIA Corporation, International Business Machines, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Samsung, HTC, and Natera.

His significant case experience includes representing Qualcomm against Apple in patent infringement actions at the International Trade Commission (ITC) and in federal court, which led to infringement findings and a confidential settlement. He also achieved a successful confidential settlement for Fortinet in a multi-venue dispute against Sophos involving patent infringement and trade secret claims. Notably, Mr. Holmes was part of the team that represented Samsung and HTC in a case where asserted patents were subsequently invalidated by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

Mr. Holmes also regularly appears before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, including PTAB proceedings, and has served as counsel in inter partes reviews. He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 2008, where he was Order of the Coif, and holds a B.A. in Molecular & Cell Biology with a Neurobiology Emphasis from the University of California, Berkeley (2004). He was admitted to the State Bar of California in December 2008.
