Amar Thakur

Amar Thakur is a seasoned patent litigation attorney with a practice focused on high-stakes technology and intellectual property disputes. His experience spans a range of technology areas including wireless communications, medical devices, life technologies, chemicals, and semiconductors. He also possesses expertise in technology, software, and internet law, including software-as-a-service (SaaS) and cloud-based contracts. His technical background is in electrical engineering.

As the leader of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP's technology and IP litigation practice, Mr. Thakur demonstrates versatility in representing both plaintiffs and defendants. While the tracked case list shows an appearance for a plaintiff, his broader experience includes obtaining a nine-figure jury verdict as lead trial counsel for a plaintiff, as well as securing a complete defense jury verdict for clients Verizon Wireless and Novatel Wireless in a patent infringement matter. He is currently representing Monticello Enterprises against major companies in a lawsuit concerning digital payment methods.

Mr. Thakur has been involved in several notable cases. He served as lead counsel for plaintiff Mformation Technologies, Inc., achieving a $147.2 million jury verdict in a patent infringement case related to wireless device remote management technology. As lead trial counsel for Clinicomp, he managed a patent infringement case concerning health care management systems that settled favorably after the court denied opposing summary judgment motions and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) upheld the validity of challenged claims, a decision affirmed by the Federal Circuit. His practice also includes significant experience with proceedings before the PTAB and he is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The case of Monticello Enterprises LLC v. Starbucks Corporation, where he appeared for the plaintiff, involved patents related to in-app payments and wireless point-of-sale transactions and was administratively closed after consolidation into a lead case.

Mr. Thakur earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington in 1992 and his Juris Doctor, with honors, from Arizona State University in 1995. He is admitted to practice in California and Arizona.
