Amanda Hollis

Amanda Hollis is a distinguished intellectual property litigator and partner in Kirkland & Ellis LLP's Chicago office, specializing in high-stakes patent disputes. Her practice encompasses a broad range of technologies, including biotechnology, medical devices, chemistry, computing, and electronics. Hollis is recognized for her ability to handle complex scientific and legal concepts, making them understandable to judges and juries.

Throughout her career, Ms. Hollis has primarily represented defendants, including major corporations such as Abbott Laboratories, Pfizer, C.R. Bard, IBM, Samsung, and Cisco, defending them against allegations of patent infringement. She has a strong track record of securing favorable outcomes for her clients, including complete defense verdicts, summary judgments of invalidity, and successful settlements.

Ms. Hollis has successfully litigated patent cases in federal courts across the country and before the United States International Trade Commission (ITC). Notable results include a Delaware federal jury verdict finding non-infringement and patent invalidity, partly on the rarely successful defense of improper inventorship. She also secured a summary judgment of invalidity for a client in a case involving hundreds of millions of dollars, where other parties settled for substantial amounts. Her experience also includes a complete defense verdict for C.R. Bard against W.L. Gore in a stent graft patent dispute, and a win for Abbott Laboratories in a DNA testing patent fight where claims were ruled invalid.

Amanda Hollis is also active in post-grant proceedings, serving as lead counsel in numerous inter partes reviews (IPRs) before the United States Patent and Trademark Office's Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). For instance, she led IPR challenges for a major biopharmaceutical company, successfully invalidating all claims of two patents protecting HERCEPTIN®, which led to a favorable settlement. She was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 2003 and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She earned her J.D., with Honors, from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 2003, and her B.S. in Biology, with a Chemistry Minor, cum laude, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2000.
