Amanda F. Wieker

Amanda F. Wieker is a patent litigation partner at McGuireWoods, specializing in intellectual property disputes with a strong focus on the medical, mechanical, and electrical arts. Her practice encompasses a broad range of technologies, as evidenced by her work on cases involving bioengineered implants for soft-tissue repair and collagen-based medical products. Wieker's experience includes representing both plaintiff and defendant-side interests in district court litigation, as well as handling significant post-grant review proceedings.

Before joining McGuireWoods in September 2024, Wieker served for nearly a decade as an Administrative Patent Judge (APJ) at the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), where she was most recently the Acting Vice Chief Administrative Patent Judge. During her tenure at the PTAB, she presided over 250 contested proceedings under the America Invents Act (AIA) and more than 440 ex parte appeals. She played a crucial role in developing and implementing the USPTO Director Review process following the United States v. Arthrex Supreme Court decision, advising on nearly 400 requests for review and assisting in over 60 decisions. Her deep PTAB experience is further highlighted by her co-authorship of an article analyzing new USPTO Director Review rules in December 2024.

Her current notable engagements include involvement in the patent litigation LifeNet Health v. Zimmer Biomet Holdings Inc. et al., where McGuireWoods represents the plaintiff, and related Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings, Embody Inc. et al. v. LifeNet Health, in which she serves as lead counsel for the defendant (and patent owner in the IPR context). An inter partes review (IPR2025-00248) was instituted against LifeNet Health's U.S. Patent Number 10,137,223, concerning aligned fiber scaffolds for tissue engineering.

Wieker holds a B.E. in biomedical engineering from Vanderbilt University and a J.D. from William & Mary Law School (Class of 2009). She is admitted to the District of Columbia bar and the Patent Bar, with her application for admission to the Virginia bar filed.
