Alfonso G. Chan

Alfonso G. Chan is a seasoned patent litigator with a practice primarily focused on complex intellectual property cases within the technology sector. His experience spans a diverse range of technical areas, including semiconductors, electronic technology-intensive matters, biomaterials, medical devices, computer systems and software, telecommunications, mobile technology, electronics, consumer products, mechanical devices, and oil and gas. He has also handled matters involving standard essential patents (SEPs).

While the sole tracked case, HyperQuery LLC v. Chaos Software GmbH et al., shows a plaintiff-side representation, Mr. Chan's broader practice involves representing both plaintiffs and defendants in district courts nationwide and before the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. He joined Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP as a partner on April 30, 2025, as part of a three-partner group with a leading plaintiff-side trial practice. Prior to Cahill, he was a partner at King & Spalding and McKool Smith, and his experience also includes Akin Gump.

Mr. Chan is recognized for his experience in high-stakes litigation, having been part of a team that earned "The American Lawyer Litigator of the Week" for a successful willful infringement jury trial victory and an honorable mention for an International Trade Commission (ITC) matter. Earlier in his career, he represented the University of Texas system in a patent royalty suit against Samsung and Sony, and Power Mosfet Technologies in an infringement case against major semiconductor companies. He is also registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and has experience in inter partes review (IPR) proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Southern Methodist University, Dedman School of Law. He also holds an M.S.E. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Virginia and a B.S., cum laude, in Materials Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, along with a Graduate Certificate in Nuclear Engineering from Bettis Reactor Engineering School. He is admitted to practice in Texas and the District of Columbia, and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States, among other federal courts.
