Alexis R. Cohen

Alexis R. Cohen is an accomplished patent litigation attorney with a primary focus on complex intellectual property disputes, particularly within the life sciences and medical device industries. Her technical background in biomedical engineering informs her practice, which also extends to software, telecommunications, technology, and advanced materials. Ms. Cohen advises clients ranging from startups to large corporations on patent risk, portfolio development, and enforcement strategies, appearing before U.S. District Courts, the Federal Circuit, arbitration tribunals, and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

Ms. Cohen frequently represents defendants in patent infringement actions. For instance, she acted as counsel for Neurent Medical Ltd., a defendant in Aerin Medical Inc. v. Neurent Medical Ltd. et al., a case involving medical devices for treating nasal airways and neuromodulation devices for rhinitis. She has a track record of successfully defending major medical device companies against multi-patent lawsuits, securing favorable settlements, and was part of a trial team that achieved a $393.6 million jury verdict for a client. She also successfully argued for the invalidation of challenged patent claims related to a nasal ablation device.

Her practice includes significant experience with post-grant proceedings before the PTAB, where she has been recognized as a "Top Diverse Practitioner in PTAB Trials" by the PTAB Bar Association in 2025. She has notably represented Medtronic Vascular, Inc. in a series of IPRs where all petitions for institution were denied, and has participated as a panelist discussing the "Continuing Evolution of Discretionary Denials at the PTAB". Additionally, she has represented petitioners in IPRs, such as Aerin Medical Inc. in challenges against Neurent Medical Ltd.'s patents.

Ms. Cohen is currently a partner at Sidley Austin LLP, having joined the firm in January 2026 from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP, where she spent nearly a decade and was elevated to partner in 2023. She earned her J.D. with highest honors from The George Washington University Law School in 2012 and holds a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, summa cum laude, from Drexel University. Prior to her firm experience, she clerked for the Honorable Ursula Ungaro at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
