Alexander Hyung-Joon Lee

Alexander Hyung-Joon Lee is a Counsel in the Intellectual Property practice at White & Case LLP, based in Silicon Valley, focusing on patent litigation, technology, and artificial intelligence (AI) related matters. His practice spans a diverse array of high-tech industries, including semiconductors, smartphones, automobiles, software, telecommunication, display systems, new materials, cybersecurity, mobile gaming, advanced manufacturing, fiber optics, energy, and web technology. He is also noted for his work across the entire AI ecosystem, advising clients on the legal, commercial, and technical aspects of this evolving field.

Lee is experienced in representing both plaintiffs and defendants in patent litigation, trade secret disputes, and licensing negotiations. His caseload reflects this balanced approach, with appearances on both the plaintiff and defendant sides in tracked cases. For example, he represented Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. as a petitioner in an inter partes review against Headwater Research LLC related to mobile device data management, which concluded in a settlement. He also acted as counsel for Samsung Display Co., Ltd. as a defendant in litigation with Mianyang BOE Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd. concerning display technology. Other notable defense matters include successfully invalidating patent claims via a patent ineligibility motion for GREE in mobile game app technology litigation and a favorable resolution for AT&T in a social networking patent case. He has also represented plaintiffs, such as Hayden AI in offensive patent litigation involving AI for traffic violations.

His patent litigation experience extends to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), where he has handled inter partes review (IPR) proceedings, including securing favorable settlements for clients that led to case terminations. Lee has also practiced as a Korean Attorney at Law and Korean Patent Attorney at leading firms in Korea and has been appointed as an advisor to the Korea Trade Commission on IP matters from 2025 to 2027.

Lee is admitted to practice in California, the District of Columbia, New York, before the US Patent and Trademark Office, and as a Solicitor in England and Wales. He is also admitted to the Unified Patent Court (EU), and to practice in Korea and before the Korean Intellectual Property Office. He holds a J.D. from New York University School of Law, a J.D. from Yonsei University, and a B.S. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Seoul National University.
