Adam Hoffman

Adam S. Hoffman is a prominent patent litigation attorney, currently a partner in the Intellectual Property and Litigation departments at Russ August & Kabat. His practice primarily focuses on representing plaintiffs in patent infringement and trade secret matters, frequently against major high-tech companies. He has also engaged in defendant-side work, notably in Google LLC v. Headwater Research LLC.

Mr. Hoffman's expertise spans a variety of technology areas, including wireless communication, network optimization, digital advertising, smart home technology, OLED displays, and Wi-Fi 6 standard-essential patents. He possesses particular expertise in patent damages. Prior to joining Russ August & Kabat, he was an associate at Irell & Manella LLP and had an appearance with Susman Godfrey.

He has been involved in numerous high-stakes cases, securing significant awards and settlements. Notable cases include his role as part of the trial team that achieved a $175 million jury verdict for Headwater Research LLC against Verizon Communications in July 2025, although this verdict was later tossed by a judge in April 2026. He was also on the trial team that secured a $278 million jury verdict for Headwater Research LLC against Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. for wireless communication patents in April/May 2025. Other significant outcomes associated with his firm and practice include a $7.5 million (enhanced to $11.2 million) jury verdict affirmed on appeal in Pavo Sols. LLC v. Kingston Tech. Co., Inc. (memory device patent), a $122 million jury verdict in AlmondNet v. Amazon (targeted advertising patents), a $20 million jury verdict affirmed on appeal in EcoFactor v. Google (smart home patents), and a $63 million (enhanced to $78 million) jury verdict in Solas OLED v. Samsung (OLED display patents).

Mr. Hoffman also possesses experience with Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings, having represented Wilus Institute of Standards and Technology Inc. in an IPR proceeding (IPR2025-00988) where the PTAB denied institution of inter partes review against Samsung Electronics Co., LTD. He graduated magna cum laude from Duke University School of Law in 2001 and was admitted to the State Bar of California in 2002.
