Adam H. Charnes

Adam H. Charnes is a seasoned litigator with a practice primarily focused on appellate and constitutional law, which also encompasses significant experience in patent litigation. He has consistently represented defendants in his tracked patent cases.

Currently a Partner at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton, Mr. Charnes has also previously appeared in patent matters with Locke Lord. His litigation experience spans various federal and state courts of appeals, including the United States Supreme Court, where he has argued cases.

In patent litigation, Mr. Charnes played a notable role representing Thryv, Inc. in Thryv, Inc. v. Click-To-Call Technologies LP, a closely watched case before the U.S. Supreme Court in December 2019. This case addressed the appealability of Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) decisions regarding the inter partes review (IPR) time bar. His work in tracked cases, such as Atlas Global Technologies LLC v. Valve Corporation (defendant, lead counsel for Locke Lord) and Uniloc USA, Inc. et al. v. Sony Corporation of America et al. (defendant, of counsel for Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton), indicates a focus on defending technology companies, specifically in software-related patent disputes.

Mr. Charnes is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania (inactive), the District of Columbia, North Carolina, and Texas, as well as numerous U.S. Courts of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1991, and his A.B., summa cum laude, from Princeton University in 1988. Following law school, he clerked for Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy and Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
