A. Andrew Mace

A. Andrew Mace is a Special Counsel in Cooley LLP's intellectual property litigation practice group, focusing on patent litigation and post-grant proceedings. His technical expertise spans various computer technologies, including networking, web and hypermedia, database, search, user interface, advertising, imaging, augmented and virtual reality, and mobile technologies. Before law school, Mr. Mace co-founded a startup to adapt educational content for Apple iPod and iPhone, underscoring his deep understanding of technology.

Mr. Mace primarily represents defendants, as evidenced by his involvement in a tracked defendant-side case and notable victories for clients such as Facebook. He secured key wins for Facebook, including the invalidation of an online messaging patent and a trial victory concerning the "Like" button. He is recognized for his extensive experience in post-grant proceedings at the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), particularly inter partes review (IPR). Mr. Mace has been involved in over 175 post-grant proceedings since 2014 and is recognized as a top petitioner attorney at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

Admitted to practice in California and New York, Mr. Mace is also registered with the USPTO. His court admissions include the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and various US District Courts in California and New York. He earned his J.D. as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar from Columbia Law School and holds an A.B. in Biology with a Computer Science minor from Duke University.
