Qualcomm sued Apple in the Southern District of California asserting the '674 patent and several other patents. The case was part of the global Qualcomm-Apple dispute and was resolved by the April 16, 2019 settlement and dismissal.
Apple petitioned for inter partes review of claims 1, 2, and 5-7 of the '674 patent. The Board's final written decision held those claims unpatentable, but the Federal Circuit vacated and remanded, and later reversed the Board; an IPR certificate issued September 25, 2025.
