Specialty & background

Ryan C. Deck is a partner in the Intellectual Property group at Troutman Pepper, focusing on patent and complex litigation. His practice encompasses a diverse range of technologies, including semiconductor manufacturing and design, graphics and audio processing, and medical and physical devices. He also handles Section 337 investigations before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), as well as trademark, trade secret, and contract disputes.

Mr. Deck primarily represents plaintiffs in patent litigation, as evidenced by his role as counsel for Shoals Technologies Group, LLC. In a prominent case, Shoals Technologies Group, LLC v. Voltage, LLC, his team secured an ITC Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) ruling that Voltage violated Section 337 by importing infringing photovoltaic cable assemblies, which protect Shoals' "Big Lead Assembly" solutions for utility-scale solar installations.

Beyond district court and ITC litigation, Mr. Deck is experienced with Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings. In the Shoals matter, his team successfully prevented the institution of Inter Partes Review petitions against the patents found to be infringed. He has also co-authored publications discussing IPRs and the Supreme Court's Arthrex decision, demonstrating his familiarity with post-grant patent review.

Mr. Deck earned his J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law in 2014 and his B.A. from Union College in 2009. He is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and New Jersey, the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
